"What do you want to eat?"
"I don't know, what do you want to eat?"
How many times have I had this conversation? The issue usually began with not having the time or energy to cook at the end of a long day. Wanting to pick something up, there were very few healthy options and the ones there were were either expensive or flavorless. Basically, I wanted the convenience of a drive-thru meal with the health and flavor of home-cooking. That was the seed for what would become Unbelievabowl.
Let's face it: we live in a world where you can get a bacon cheeseburger, fries, soda, and fried chicken nuggets for $4. You can't even get a salad for that. It is no wonder that more than 2/3 of Americans are overweight! It's not news that obesity is linked to more than 60 chronic diseases (source). So while that fast food meal is only $4 today, obesity costs Americans $147 billion dollars. In fact, the medical costs for people with obesity are $1,429 higher each year than those of people with a normal weight (source).
A lot of our food today is designed to be cheap, last long on the shelf, and taste so incredibly good that it's hard to resist. These sugar-laden, high-fat foods are designed to stimulate the reward centers of our brain (source) and are often compared to nicotine and cocaine. Some neighborhoods don't even have the option of purchasing real foods like fresh fruit and vegetables. Convenience stores in these areas only sell sodas, candy and processed, packaged junk foods.
Unbelievabowl aims to change that by making healthy, tasty food convenient and affordable for everyone. Nutrition shouldn't be based on zip code or socioeconomic class. We are excited to make a difference in our community through something everyone loves: food!
